The Jets will be without 28-year old WR Jerricho Cotchery for the next 2 weeks due to a groin injury he suffered yesterday against the Browns. Cotchery has played in 9 games for the Jets so far this year and he has 29 catches for 315 yards (10.9 avg) with 2 TD grabs. But, for some reason Mark Sanchez has had a tough time connecting with him as he has only completed 29 of 60 passes to him (48.3%) so far this year.
The Jets will be without starting CB Darrelle Revis as he re-injured his hamstring last night. The Jets hope that he will only miss the game in Denver this weekend. Revis has played in 3 games for the Jets so far this year and he has 4 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 fumble recovery. Kyle Wilson will start opposite of Antonio Cromartie this weekend against a Broncos’ offense that can really throw the football.
The Jets have lost starting nose tackle Kris Jenkins for the rest of the 2010 season due to a torn left ACL he suffered last night against the Ravens. He is a tough guy though as he walked off the field on his own power after making 1 tackle in the game. The Jets will shuffle up the D-Line due to Jenkins’ injury. Sione Pouha will move from DE to NT to replace Jenkins in the starting lineup. He had a big game last night against the Ravens with 7 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. Mike DeVito will replace Pouha as the starting DE. He had 7 tackles last night for the Jets. The Jets will miss Jenkins but at least they have enough depth to cover for him the rest of the year.
The Jets have lost starting OLB Calvin Pace for at least the next 6 weeks due to a broken right foot. Pace played in 12 games for the Jets last year and he had 55 tackles, 1 pass defensed, 8 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. The Jets might not miss him a whole lot is 35-year old Jason Taylor still has something left in the gas tank. Taylor played in 16 games for the enemy Miami Dolphins last season and he had 42 tackles, 5 passes defensed, 7 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 1 INT.
The Jets have placed 25-year old DT Ropati Pitoitua on the Injured Reserve List due to a Achilles Tendon Injury. Pitoitua played in the first two pre-season games for the Jets making 4 tackles. He played in 8 games as a rookie for the Jets last season and he made 3 tackles. This injury will hurt the depth of the Jets’ front line as they were going to play Pitoitua a little more in 2010.
The Jets are confident that Leon Washington will be able to give them a lot of production in 2010 as long as he can stay healthy. Washington played in 7 games for the Jets last season and he carried the ball 72 times for 331 yards (4.6 ypc). He also caught 15 passes for 131 yards (8.7 avg) last season for the Jets. Washington’s season ended with a broken leg in 2009 but reports are that his recovery is coming along quite well. Washington has now played in 55 games in his four years with the Jets and he has carried the ball 370 times for 1,782 yards (4.8 ypc) with 13 TD runs. Washington also has caught 123 passes for 969 yards (7.9 avg) with 2 TD grabs in his time with the Jets. Washington has a perfect skill set to combine with Shonn Greene’s to give the Jets dynamic play again in 2010 out of the running back position.
The Jets have lost 35-year old linebacker Larry Izzo for the year due to a neck injury. Izzo played in 12 games for the Jets this year and he made 7 tackles and he forced 2 fumbles. Izzo has now played in 200 games in his NFL career and he has 179 tackles, 3 passes defensed, 3 forced fumbles and 1 interception. The Jets will miss Izzo who has been a special teams ace for them for a long, long time. Hopefully this injury won’t end his career.
The Jets could be without starting strong safety Jim Leonhard for a while due to surgery he has had to repair a thumb that he fractured against the Jags last Sunday. Leonhard has played in 9 games this season for the Jets and he has 43 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, 4 passes defensed and he has 1 interception. The Jets will also miss Leonhard on special teams as he has been the punt returner. Leonhard has returned 21 punts for 173 yards (8.2 avg) this year for the Jets. Eric Smith will replace Leonhard on defense. He has played in 9 games for the Jets this season and he has 27 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 4 passes defensed and 1 interception. Smith should be able to do a decent job at safety while Leonhard is healing.
The Jets have lost 27-year old running back Leon Washington for the season because he needed surgery to repair a fractured leg. This is a huge loss for the Jets as Washington is one of the best all around players on the football team. Washington played in 7 games for the Jets this season and he carried the ball 72 times for 331 yards (4.6 ypc). He also caught 15 passes for 131 yards (8.7 avg) this season for the Jets. That’s not all however as Washington also helped out a lot on special teams for the Jets. He returned 16 kickoffs for 385 yards (24.1 avg) and 2 punts for 16 yards (8.0 avg) this season for the Jets. 24-year old rookie Shonn Greene will replace Washington at RB. He has played in 5 games for the Jets this season and he has carried the ball 26 times for 174 yards (6.7 ypc) with 2 TD runs. Greene should be able to more than replace Washington running the ball but he is nowhere near the receiver out of the backfield that Washington was. The Jets will also miss Washington on kickoff returns as he was a threat to go the distance every time he touched the ball.
The Jets have lost starting NT Kris Jenkins for the season due to a severe knee injury. He finishes the season for the Jets with 13 tackles including 4 tackles for a loss. DE Sione Pouha will slide inside to replace Jenkins at nose guard. He has 19 tackles including 1 tackle for a loss. This is a downgrade for the Jets as Jenkins was a better run defender than Pouha is. Marques Douglas will replace Pouha at DE. He has 26 tackles this season, 1/2 a sack and he has 2 tackles for a loss. This injury really will hurt the run defense of the Jets going forward.
UPDATE: The Jets have re-signed 30-year old Howard Green to help cushion the blow of losing Kris Jenkins. Green has played in 3 games for the Jets this season and he has 6 tackles.
