The New York Jets release Laveranues Coles

Blogged under Leaving Town, Bloglockers, Front Page, Attention Jets Fans, General by admin on Wednesday 1 September 2010 at 4:24 pm

The Jets have released 32-year old WR Laveranues Colts.  Coles played in 3 pre-season games for the Jets this year and he caught 4 passes for 19 yards (4.8 avg).  Coles played in 16 games (13 starts) for the Bengals last year in which he caught 43 passes for 514 yards (12.0 avg) with 5 TD grabs.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Coles hooked on with another team soon but the Jets liked their other receivers better so I don’t have an issue with this.

The New York Jets cut Kevin O’Connell

The Jets have cut 25-year old QB Kevin O’Connell.  O’Connell played in three pre-season games for the Jets and he completed 8 of 16 passes (50%) for 70 yards with 0 TD passes and 2 INTs (22.4 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 2 times for 7 yards (3.5 ypc) for the Jets in the pre-season.  This did not come as much of a surprise with Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens ahead of O’Connell on the depth chart.

The New York Jets place Ropati Pitoitua on I.R.

The Jets have placed 25-year old DT Ropati Pitoitua on the Injured Reserve List due to a Achilles Tendon Injury.  Pitoitua played in the first two pre-season games for the Jets making 4 tackles.  He played in 8 games as a rookie for the Jets last season and he made 3 tackles.  This injury will hurt the depth of the Jets’ front line as they were going to play Pitoitua a little more in 2010.

The Jets have signed 32-year old WR Laveranues Coles.  Coles played in 16 games (13 starts) for the Bengals last season and he caught 43 passes for 514 yards (12.0 avg) with 5 TD grabs.  He has now played in 153 games (135 starts) in his 10 years in the NFL and he has caught 674 passes for 8,609 yards (12.8 avg) with 49 TD grabs.  He has also carried the ball 37 times for 231 yards (6.2 ypc) in his NFL career.  Coles has played 7 seasons for the Jets in his career.  He has played in 105 games (90 starts) in his career with the Jets and he has caught 459 passes for 5,941 yards (12.9 avg) with 37 TD grabs.  Coles has carried the ball 22 times for 185 yards (8.4 ypc) with the Jets.  This was a good signing for the Jets as Coles will be a very solid #3 or #4 WR for them in 2010.

The New York Jets sign Mark Brunell

The Jets have signed 39-year old QB Mark Brunell to a 2-year deal.  Brunell played in 16 games  (1 start) for the Saints last season and he completed 15 of 30 passes (50%) for 102 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT (44.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 4 times for -12 yards (-3.0 ypc) last season.  He has now played in 175 games (151 starts) in his NFL career and he has completed 2,753 of 4,624 passes (59.5%) for 31,928 yards with 182 TD passes and 107 INTs (83.9 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 513 times for 2,421 yards (4.7 ypc) with 15 TD runs in his career.  Brunell is 78-73 as a starting QB in the NFL.  He will likely bump Kellen Clemens off the roster and that would be a good thing for the Jets.
