The New York Jets need their WRs to step up

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Needs to Step Up by admin on Thursday 27 October 2011 at 5:16 pm

The Jets’ WRs have not lived up to their potential so far this year and it’s hurting the offense.  Santonio Holmes has caught 22 passes for 311 yards (14.1 avg) with 3 TD grabs so far this year.  He has been blaming the offensive line for the offense’s problems instead of stepping up his game, which is what he needs to do.  Despite catching 3 TD passes last weekend against the Chargers, Plaxico Burress has been a disappointment overall in 2011.  He has caught 18 passes for 243 yards (13.5 avg) with 5 TD grabs for the Jets so far this year.  Rookie Jeremy Kerley has stepped into the role of #3 WR Derrick Mason, who was recently dealt to the Texans.  Kerley has caught 9 passes for 82 yards (9.1 avg) with 1 TD grab so far this year.  The Jets need this trio of WRs to step up.

The New York Jets release center Colin Baxter

Blogged under Attention Jets Fans,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Leaving Town by admin on Wednesday 26 October 2011 at 1:13 pm

The Jets have released 24-year old rookie center Colin Baxter.  Baxter played in 3 games (2 starts) for the Jets this year.  Baxter was awful filling in for Nick Mangold earlier this year.  Now that Mangold is back, the Jets have absolutely no need to keep Baxter around.  If Mangold gets hurt again, the Jets can find a street free agent better than Baxter.

New York Jets 27, San Diego Chargers 21

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by admin on Monday 24 October 2011 at 2:38 pm

The Chargers were up 21-10 at the half, but Rex Ryan made good adjustments at the half as the Jets rolled 17-0 in the second half and on to victory.  Mark Sanchez was solid yesterday as he completed 18 of 33 passes for 173 yards with 3 TD passes and 1 INT.  He also carried the ball 3 times for 25 yards (8.3 ypc) in this game.  Shonn Greene led the way on the ground for the Jets in this game with 112 yards rushing on 20 carries (5.6 ypc).  LaDainian Tomlinson pitched in with 14 yards rushing on 5 carries (2.8 ypc) and he caught 3 passes for 37 yards (12.3 avg).  TE Dustin Keller caught 4 passes for 53 yards (13.3 avg) but he lost a fumble that was returned 37 yards for a TD by Chargers’ LB Donald Butler.  WRs Jeremy Kerley (4 rec, 29 yards) and Plaxico Burress (4 rec, 25 yards, 3 TDs) also made some big plays in the passing game for the Chargers yesterday.  The Chargers finished up with 162 yards rushing on 31 carries (5.2 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 33 passes (54.5%) for 156 yards as they has possession of the ball for 32:46.

The defense was very solid for the Jets yesterday.  Safety Eric Smith (10 tackles) and rookie DE Muhammad Wilkerson (5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 pass defensed) led the way for the Jets’ D in this game.  CBs Darrelle Revis (interception that he returned 64 yards) and CB Kyle Wilson (interception) also made big plays for the Jets yesterday.  The Chargers finished up with 96 yards rushing on 25 carries (3.8 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 32 passes (50%) for 172 yards.  The Jets are now back on the right track at 4-3 on the season.

The New York Jets place WR Logan Payne on I.R.

Blogged under Attention Jets Fans,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injury Reports by admin on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 9:19 pm

The Jets have finally placed 26-year old WR Logan Payne on the Injured Reserve List, ending his season due to a wrist that he dislocated in the pre-season.  Payne didn’t play in any games for the Jets this year.  He has played in 2 games (2 starts) in his NFL career and he has caught 3 passes for 39 yards (13.0 avg).  All of his catches came back in 2008 with the Seahawks.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Jets.

New York Jets (3-3) vs. San Diego Chargers (4-1)

Blogged under Uncategorized by admin on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 4:20 am

Rex Ryan and Norv Turner traded barbs in the media this week adding some more spice to Sunday’s Game.  As if it didn’t already have enough with LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie wanting to get back at their old team.  The Jets are 3-0 at home this year, where they have played really well.  The Chargers are coming off of their bye week.  The four teams that the Chargers have beaten this year have a combined record of 4-17 so far this year.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Jets have the ball:  The Jets are going to try to push the Chargers around with the running game this weekend.  Shonn Greene and L.T. are going to take aim at the Chargers’ D as they are giving up 113.6 yards rushing per game and 4.6 yards per carry so far this year.  If the Jets can give Mark Sanchez time to throw the ball (the Chargers only have 8 sacks so far this year), he’s going to make some plays down the field off of playaction to Dustin Keller, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress.

When the Chargers have the ball:  The Jets are going to have to make a concerted effort to stop RBs Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert if they want to win this weekend.  The Jets are going to blitz a lot, so look for the Chargers to throw a lot of passes to the RBs on screens and to TE Antonio Gates over the middle.  The Jets are confident that Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie will be able to lock down Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd this Sunday.

PREDICTION:  JETS 23, CHARGERS 20

The New York Jets have the best pair of starting corners in the NFL

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by admin on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 4:11 am

Forget all of the nonsense about the Eagles having the best corners in the NFL.  That is hogwash!  The Jets have by far the best starting pair of corners in the NFL.  Opposing QBs have a 62.1 QB Rating so far this year, and it’s largely because of the corners.  26-year old Darrelle Revis is 100% healthy after an injury filled 2010 season.  He has played in all 6 games for the Jets so far this year and he has 18 tackles, 7 passes defensed and 3 interceptions (120 return yards) with 1 TD.  His interception return last Monday Night against the Dolphins went for a 100 yard TD.  On the other side of the D is 27-year old corner Antonio Cromartie.  He has played in all six games for the Jets so far this year and he has 18 tackles, 4 passes defensed and 3 interceptions (105 return yards)!  These guys are almost impossible to throw on and the Jets like it that way.

New York Jets 24, Miami Dolphins 6

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by admin on Tuesday 18 October 2011 at 4:23 pm

The Jets beat up on the hapless Dolphins a little bit last night.  Mark Sanchez was efficient as he completed 14 of 25 passes for 201 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  He also carried the ball 1 time for 5 yards with a TD run.  Shonn Greene led the way for the Jets on the ground with 74 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.5 ypc).  LaDainian Tomlinson pitched in with 25 yards rushing on 7 carries (3.6 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 21 yards (7.0 avg).  WR Santonio Holmes (3 rec, 63 yards, TD), TE Dustin Keller (2 rec, 51 yards) and RB Joe McKnight (2 rec, 29 yards) led the way in the passing game for the Jets.  The Jets finished up with 104 yards rushing on 29 carries (3.6 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 25 passes (56%) for 192 yards as they had possession of the ball for 30:21.

The Jets’ defense was excellent last night.  Safety Jim Leonhard (7 tackles), OLB Calvin Pace (7 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 QB hits and 1 tackle for a loss) and CB Darrelle Revis (3 tackles, 4 passes defensed and a interception that he returned 100 yards for a TD) led the way for the Jets’ D last night.  CB Kyle Wilson (5 tackles), LB Bart Scott (5 tackles, 1 QB hit and 1/2 a sack) and CB Marquice Cole (3 tackles and a fumble recovery) also had solid games for the Jets.  The Dolphins finished up with 118 yards rushing on 25 carries (4.7 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 34 passes (47.1%) for 190 yards in this game.  The Jets are now 3-3 on the season.

New York Jets (2-3) vs. Miami Dolphins (0-4)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 15 October 2011 at 6:16 pm

The New York Jets have to be glad to be back home after having a very disappointing 3-game road trip in which they lost all of the games.  They are 2-0 at home this year, outscoring their opponents 59-27.  The Dolphins had a bye week last weekend, so they have had two weeks to get ready for the Jets.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Jets have the ball:  The Jets want to get the running game going again.  Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson will likely get their fair share of touches against a Dolphins’ D that is allowing 107.5 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry so far this year.  Head Coach Rex Ryan might take the shackles off of QB Mark Sanchez as the Dolphins are giving up 307.0 yards passing per game so far this year.  The Dolphins’ secondary flat out stinks, so if Sanchez has time to throw the ball (a big if), he’s going to do some damage down the field.  Dustin Keller, Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes and LaDainian Tomlinson are all in line for big games in the passing game this Monday Night.

When the Dolphins have the ball:  The Dolphins are going to try to run the ball with Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush against a Jets’ that is allowing 134.8 yards rushing per game and 4.2 yards per carry.  The Dolphins are likely going to keep the passing game short in an effort to protect QB Matt Moore from the Jets’ blitzing game.  He has talented WRs in Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Anthony Fasano and Reggie Bush.

PREDICTION:  JETS 23, DOLPHINS 17

The New York Jets need Mark Sanchez to step up

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by admin on Wednesday 12 October 2011 at 7:32 pm

The New York Jets need 24-year old QB Mark Sanchez to step up.  The Jets are having a hard time running the ball because opposing teams are putting extra defenders in the box to force Sanchez to beat them with his arm.  Sanchez has played in all five games for the Jets so far this year and he has completed 97 of 173 passes (56.1%) for 1,171 yards with 8 TD passes and 5 INTs (80.4 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 9 times for 37 yards (4.1 ypc) with 1 TD run so far this year.  Sanchez has been inconsistent as a thrower in his NFL career and the Jets hope that he can fix that this year as the season goes on.

The New York Jets deal WR Derrick Mason to the Texans

Blogged under Attention Jets Fans,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Trades by admin on Wednesday 12 October 2011 at 1:38 pm

The Jets have dealt 37-year old WR Derrick Mason to the Houston Texans for a conditional 7th round pick.  Mason played in all five games for the Jets in 2011 and he caught 13 passes for 115 yards (8.8 avg).  He has voiced his displeasure over the offensive gameplans which made it even easier for the Jets to deal him.  22-year old rookie WR Jeremy Kerley will now be the Jets’ #3 WR going forward.  He has played in all five games for the Jets so far this year and he has caught 3 passes for 35 yards (11.7 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Kerley has also returned 11 punts for 125 yards (11.4 avg) and 1 kickoff for 15 yards so far this year.
