The New York Jets are very happy with last April’s Draft picks

The Jets only selected three players in last April’s Draft but they are still smiling.  QB Mark Sanchez (1st round, #5 overall) has stepped right into the starting job and he has been solid overall despite sub par numbers.  Sanchez has completed 114 of 214 passes (53.3%) for 1,443 yards with 8 TD passes and 10 INTs (67.6 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 24 times for 60 yards (2.5 ypc) with 3 TD runs so far this season.  Look for him to keep improving with experience.  RB Shonn Greene (3rd round, #65 overall) had been a disappointment until Leon Washington was lost for the season which got him onto the football field.  Greene has carried the ball 34 times for 192 yards (5.6 ypc) with 2 TD runs so far this season.  Expect him to be very active in the 2nd half of the season for the Jets as he will be Thomas Jones’ backup.  OG Matt Slausen (6th round, #193 overall) injured himself in training camp and it ended his rookie season before it even started.  This looks like it was a excellent draft as Sanchez and Greene look like they will be impact players down the road for the Jets.

New York Jets 25, Miami Dolphins 30

The New York Jets (4-4) kickoff coverage was awful in this game as they let the Miami Dolphins’ (3-4) Tedd Ginn Jr. return not one, but two kickoffs for touchdowns.  Both returns came in the third quarter too.  The Dolphins got 21 points in the 3rd quarter, none of which came from their offense, as Jason Taylor recovered a Shonn Greene fumble and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown along with Ginn’s two scores.  Mark Sanchez had a very good game for the Jets.  The rookie quarterback went 20/35 for 265 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.  It was a pretty good day for the Jets if not for the two Ginn returns.  If not for those two returns in the 3rd quarter, the Jets would have won this game.

The Jets defense did a good job slowing down the Dolphins dangerous running attack.  They held Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to a combined 54 yards on 19 carries(2.8 avg).  They did not force Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne into any interceptions, but Henne did not have a big day at all.  He finished with only 112 yards on 11/22 passes, but he did have a touchdown pass.  The Jets special teams wasted a solid offensive and defensive effort in this one, as Ginn’s returns were the difference maker.
