The New York Jets shouldn’t have benched Chad Pennington

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by admin on Wednesday 28 November 2007 at 10:11 pm

The Jets have not had this horrible season because of Chad Pennington….it has been their defense which is awful!  The Jets have allowed 150.5 yards rushing per game (4.4 ypc) and they also have allowed 215.7 yards passing….and that’s unacceptable!  So, who do the Jets bench?  The QB of course!  Chad Pennington has completed 128 of 190 passes (67.4%) for 1,317 yards with 9 TD passes and 7 interceptions (87.5 QB Rating) so far this season.  The Jets have replaced Pennington with 2nd year man Kellen Clemens.  Clemens has completed 78 of 159 passes (49.1%) for 892 yards with 3 TD passes and 6 interceptions (56.9 QB Rating) so far this season.  The Jets have a tough schedule so they would be better off with Pennington starting but Mangini is too much of a hard head to see that.

Dallas Cowboys 34, New York Jets 3

The Jets looked like they needed a few more days off to recover from there emotional win over the Steelers last Sunday as the Cowboys totally kicked their asses yesterday.  The Jets only held onto the football for 22:08 of the football game which explains why the  score was so lop sided.  Kellen Clemens looked lost in the pressure the Cowboys were applying as he only completed 12 of 27 passes for 142 yards with a interception.  Thomas Jones also had a long day as he carried the ball 17 times for 40 yards (2.4 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 17 yards (8.5 avg).  TE Chris Baker led the Jets with only 3 catches for 36 yards (12.0 avg).  The Jets finished this game with 60 yards rushing on 21 carries (2.9 ypc) and they also completed 12 of 27 passes for 120 yards.

The “defense” was led by safety Abram Elam who had 9 tackles yesterday.  The Cowboys finished up with 174 yards on 34 carries (5.1 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 28 passes for 170 yards.

New York Jets vs. Dallas Cowboys

The Jets look like they are finally waking up as they defeated the Steelers in overtime last week and they fell in OT against Washington in the game before.  The Cowboys are looking like they are the 2nd or 3rd best team in football right now.

The Jets will likely try to run the ball a lot with Thomas Jones (723 yards rushing) and Leon Washington in an attempt to keep the ball away from the Cowboys offense.  That will be easier said than done as the Cowboys only allow 84.3 yards rushing per game and 3.6 ypc.  Kellen Clemens did make some big throws in the game last week but he must be careful against a Cowboys defense that has 15 interceptions  already this season.

The Cowboys will likely try to get the lead passing and then pound the ball on the ground to finish up the game.  Tony Rom0 (2,848 yards, 27 TDs and 12 INTs) and Terrell Owens (58 rec, 1.028 yards, 12 TD receptions) will likely be playing a game of catch all game long unless the Jets are effective in blitzing like they were last week against the Steelers.  Marion Barber and Julius Jones should both have decent games against the Jets defense which is allowing 148.2 yards rushing per game.

PREDICTION:  COWBOYS 28, JETS 17

New York Jets 19, Pittsburgh Steelers 16 in OT

The Jets saved there best for last in this game on offense as they tied the Steelers with less than a minute left and then beat them in OT.  Kellen Clemens completed 14 of 31 passes for 162 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception.  He also carried the ball 1 time for 15 yards.  Thomas Jones had probably his best game of the season against the Steelers as he carried the ball 30 times for 117 yards (3.9 ypc).  Leon Washington only carried the ball 2 times for 10 yards (5.0 ypc) but he made a huge impact in overtime as he returned a punt 33-yards to set up the game-winning drive.  Chris Baker made some big catches in this game as he finished with 4 grabs for 34 yards (8.5 avg) with a TD grab.  The Jets finished with 151 yards rushing on 34 carries (4.4 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 31 passes for 146 yards.

The Jets defense played the running game on the way to the QB and that rattled the Steelers offense in this game.  Rookie linebacker David Harris led the way for the Jets with 11 tackles and a sack.  DE Shaun Ellis was outstanding in this game as he had 5 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery.  DT Dewayne Robertson was unstoppable for the Jets with 5 tackles and 2.5 sacks.  The Steelers finished up with 112 yards rushing on 33 carries (3.4 ypc) and they also completed 15 of 25 passes for 151 yards.

The New York Jets waive safety Rashad Washington

The Jets have waived reserve safety Rashad Washington after his bout with special teams penalties the last couple of weeks.  He had 5 tackles this season and he will not likely be missed too much as he was pretty far down on the depth chart.
