New York Jets vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, This Week's Matchup Report, General by dawgpounded on Friday 19 October 2007 at 8:59 pm

This game has the potential to be a big-time shootout as both teams have good skills players on offense and terrible defenses.  These two teams are two of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season as the Jets are 1-5 and the Bengals are 1-4.

If the Jets were smart (LOL) they would run the football to attempt to keep their own defense on the sidelines.  Thomas Jones (420 yards rushing) appears to be waking up and he should have a good game Sunday against the Bengals defense who are allowing 145.8 yards rushing per game and 4.9 ypc.  Jets’ QBs have been sacked 15 times this season already but if the line gives Chad Pennington time to throw he will have a good game.  Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery will give the young Bengals corners all kinds of trouble in this game.

With Rudi Johnson doubtful to play in this game look for an Air Raid by the Bengals offense.  Opposing QBs are sporting a 100.1 QB Rating against the Jets so Carson Palmer has to be licking his chops right now.  Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh will likely have big games against the Jets who are allowing 243.3 yards passing per game.  Kenny Watson (5.2 ypc) has played well while Rudi Johnson has been out and the Jets are allowing 131.5 yards rushing and 4.2 ypc so the Bengals will run the ball if they get an early lead in this game.

PREDICTION:  This will be the most entertaining game of the day if you like offense.  I will side with the Bengals because they have better skill players than the Jets do.  BENGALS 34, JETS 28.

Philadelphia Eagles 16, New York Jets 9

Another week….another pathetic performance by the Jets.  Chad Pennington had another sub par game as he completed 11 of 21 passes for 128 yards with 0 TDs and 1 INT.  Thomas Jones was the lone bright spot on offense as he carried the football 24 times for 130 yards (5.4 ypc).  Jerricho Cotchery also had a solid game with 5 catches for 71 yards (14.2 avg).  The Jets finished up with 158 yards rushing on 32 carries (4.9 ypc) and they also completed 11 of 21 passes for 109 yards.

The defense only gave up 16 points but they gave up a ton of yards.  CB Darrelle Revis (9 tackles) and safety Kerry Rhodes (8 tackles, sack) led the way for the Jets defense.  The Eagles rushed for 151 yards on 28 carries (5.4 ypc) and they also completed 22 of 35 passes for 262 yards.

New York Jets vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Both of these teams are desperate for a victory as the Eagles are 1-3 while the Jets are 1-4.  Donovan McNabb is still trying to get into his groove as something appears to be missing from his game.  Chad Pennington of the Jets is still trying to fight off Kellen Clemens for his starting job.

The Eagles will be getting RB Brian Westbrook back this week from injury and that should scare the Jets who are allowing 127.6 yards rushing per game and 4.0 yards per carry.  Westbrook is averaging 171.3 yards rushing and receiving per game and 7.3 yards per touch so far this season and he will be a major pain in the side of the Jets Front 7 on defense.  The Jets only have 3 sacks this season so McNabb should have time to throw against a Jets defense that is allowing 239.6 yards passing per game.  Look for both Kevin Curtis (19 rec, 323 yards, 3 TDs) and Reggie Brown (8 rec, 81 yards) to have good games against the Jets.

The Eagles blitz from all angles and that will cause the Jets problems.  The Jets have allowed 12 sacks this season while the Eagles already have 16 sacks in only 4 games.  DE Trent Cole (5 sacks) will get to have body contact with Chad Pennington early and often in this game.  The only way to slow the pass rush of the Eagles is to run the football so the Jets will attempt to run the football with Thomas Jones (290 yards rushing, 3.3 ypc) against the rugged run defense of the Eagles which is allowing only 74.5 yards rushing per game and 3.4 yards per carry.  The Jets must keep the passing game short to Laveranues Coles (32 rec, 300 yards, 4 TDs) and Jerricho Cotchery (30 rec, 414 yards) because they likely won’t have much time to throw the ball.

PREDICTION:  The matchups spell doom for the Jets in this game.  Look for the Eagles to win this game as the fans start yelling for Kellen Clemens before halftime.

New York Giants 35, New York Jets 24

Too bad this game wasn’t only three quarters because the Jets were the better team until…..the 4th quarter.  The Jets gave up an 8 play, 98 yard drive in the final stanza and Chad Pennington completed a pass to rookie CB Aaron Ross on the Giants that he returned 43 yards for a TD to finish the scoring in this football game.  QB Chad Pennington had a rough game as he completed 21 of 36 passes for 229 yards with 1 TD pass and 3 interceptions.  Thomas Jones had another poor game as he carried the ball 13 times for 36 yards (2.8 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 14 yards.  Laveranues Coles led all Jets receivers with 8 receptions for 89 yards (11.1 avg) and Brad Smith (3 rec, 44 yards, TD) also had a solid game.  The Jets finished up with 55 yards rushing on 25 carries (2.2 ypc) and they have completed 21 of 36 passes for 222 yards.

The defense was awful again yesterday but it’s hard to blame safety Kerry Rhodes for that as he led the Jets with 9 tackles and he returned a fumble 11 yards for a TD in the first quarter.  Still, the Giants rushed for 188 yards on 39 carries (4.8 ypc) and they completed 13 of 25 passes for 186 yards.

A bright spot for the Jets was Leon Washington who returned 3 kickoffs for 155 yards (51.7 avg) including a 98-yard return for a TD.  He also returned 2 punts for 20 yards.

Leon Washington does it all for the New York Jets

Reserve running back does everything for the Jets.  He returns punts, kickoffs, catches passes and runs the football.  He’s also very effective at his many jobs as he is averaging 103.8 total yards per game this year.  Washington has carried the football 15 times for 57 yards (3.8 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also has caught 11 passes for 68 yards (6.2 avg).  He would be the main running back if something happened to starter Thomas Jones.  Washington has only returned 3 punts for 11 yards (3.7 avg) but he has been outstanding on kickoff returns.  He has returned 9 kickoffs for 279 yards (31.0 avg) including a 98-yarder for a TD.  Washington is averaging 10.9 yards every time he touches the football this season.
