The Jets stole running back Thomas Jones from the Bears and they couldn’t be happier. The Jets made the playoffs despite having a poor running game so it would seem that their offense will be really improved this season. Jones played in 16 games (all starts) with the Bears last season and he carried the football 296 times for 1,210 yards (4.1 ypc) with 6 TD runs. He also caught 36 passes for 154 yards (4.3 avg) with 0 TDs. Jones is a fast, hard runner that can score on long runs as soon as he gets past the front seven of the defense. He has played in 100 games (63 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 1,349 times for 5,384 yards (4.0 ypc) with 34 TD runs. He also has caught 215 passes for 1,376 yards (6.4 avg) with 0 TDs.Â
Leon Washington has a rookie last season and he played pretty well despite his lack of size. He played in all 16 games (8 starts) and he carried the football 151 times for 650 yards (4.3 ypc) with 4 TD runs. He also caught 25 passes for 270 yards (10.8 avg). Washington also helped out a little on special teams as he returned 6 kickoffs for 79 yards (13.2 avg) and 13 punts for 97 yards (7.5 avg). Look for Washington to be used more as a receiver as the third down back this season but he will also give Jones a rest once in a while in the running game.
Cedric Houston will likely be the #3 running back on the depth chart. He is more of a basic power type running back that would rather run over you than around you. He played in 8 games (1 start) last season for the Jets and he carried the ball 113 times for 374 yards (3.3 ypc) with 5 TD runs. He also caught 7 passes for 43 yards (6.1 avg). Houston has never really taken advantage of his opportunities thus far in his NFL career. He has played in 20 games (5 starts) and he has carried the ball 194 times for 676 yards (3.5 ypc) with 7 TD runs. He also has caught 15 passes for 109 yards (7.3 avg).
