The New York Jets need to have Chad Pennington play another full season

Chad Pennington might not look like much…..he has a very weak throwing arm, he’s injury prone and he doesn’t have the fastest feet around….but he’s a winner.  That’s why the Jets will have a good chance to return to the playoffs as long as they keep Pennington in one piece.  Pennington started all 16 games for the Jets last season and he completed 313 of 485 passes (64.5%) for 3,352 yards with 17 TD passes and 16 INTs (82.6 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 35 times for 109 yards (3.1 ypc).  I’m still amazed that anyone questions Chad Pennington’s toughness as many QBs would have just quit if they had as many major injuries as Pennington has had.  Pennington has played in 60 games (53 starts) in his career and he’s completed 1,080 of 1,659 passes (65.1%) for 11,973 yards with 72 TD passes and 46 INTs (89.3 QB Rating).  He also has carried the football 127 times for 364 yards (2.9 ypc) with 5 TD runs.

Last year the Jets drafted Kellen Clemens in the 2nd round out of Oregon to be their QB of the future but that will have to wait a while now.  Clemens only played in 2 games for the Jets last season and he threw one incomplete pass and carried the football 2 times for 10 yards (5.0 ypc).  Clemens appears to have a bright future as the coaching staff likes him.

The Jets signed Marques Tuiasosopo to be their #3 QB.  He was a good college quarterback but he appears severely overmatched in the NFL so far in his career.  Last year in Oakland he played in 2 games (0 starts) and he completed 6 of 13 (46.2%) passes for 68 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 INTs (48.4 QB Rating).  He carried the ball 4 times for 29 yards (7.3 ypc).  Tuiasosopo doesn’t have a strong arm as his only strength is his mobility in the pocket.  He has played in 11 games (2 starts) in his NFL career and he’s completed 48 of 88 passes (54.5%) for 550 yards with 2 TD passes and 7 INTs (48.0 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 15 times for 68 yards (4.5 ypc).
