Jets look horrible in 20-13 loss to Browns

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 29 October 2006 at 10:33 pm

The New York Jets played one of their worst football games in the last couple of seasons, but still had a chance late in the game to tie it up.  The Jets failed in their comeback attempt as the offense played a very poor football game.  Chad Pennington completed only 11 of 28 passes for 108 yards and 2 INT.  Leon Washington couldn’t find much running room as he carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards (3.4 ypc) and lost a fumble.  Kevan Barlow carried the ball 5 times for 16 yards (3.2 ypc).  WRs Jerricho Cotchery caught 5 passes for 43 yards and Laveranues Coles caught 4 passes for 40 yards.

The defense was led by linebacker Eric Barton who had 9 tackles and a sack.  The Jets had a hard time stopping the Browns from running the football, as the Browns ran the ball 39 times for 147 yards (3.8 ypc).  The Browns completed 15 of 22 passes for 120 net yards passing.

Justin Miller returned a kick-off 99 yards for the only Jets TD of the football game.

Jets vs. Browns

The New York Jets are surprisingly 4-3 after finishing 4-12 last season.  Before you get to excited about that….the cumulative record of the teams the Jets have beaten is 5-22!  The Cleveland Browns are 1-5 and are the kind of team that the Jets have had success against.  The Browns, however, could be inspired by the fact that they have a new offensive co-ordinator (Jeff Davidson) calling the plays.

Look for the Jets to come out running the ball against the Browns with their suddenly good running attack.  Rookie Leon Washington will get alot of carries but Kevan Barlow will do the heavy lifting near the goal-line.  The Browns allow 144.2 yards rushing per game and 4.6 yards per carry.  Qb Chad Pennington could have success throwing the ball to Laveranues Coles (42 rec, 566 yards) and Jerricho Cotchery (30 rec, 418 yards) against a secondary that is playing guys like Ralph Brown and Daven Holly at corner.

Coach Davidson couldn’t pick a better opponent to start his job as offensive co-ordinator against.  The Jets can’t stop the run (142.4 yards per game, 4.5 yards per carry) or the pass (229.9 net yards passing per game)!  Look for the Browns to come out running the ball.  Reuben Droughns should finally have a good game as he only has 257 yards rushing this season.  The Jets really don’t have much of a pass rush, so Charlie Frye could actually have a good game throwing the ball.  Look for short shots to Kellen Winslow (33 rec, 317 yards) and Joe Jurevicius to set up long passes to Braylon Edwards (22 rec, 357 yards).

This game will be a very close game in which the outcome could come down to one big play.  I have a feeling that one of the kick-returners will have a game-altering play in this game.  Hard for me to pick a side here, it would have been easier if Maurice Carthon had not been fired, because there’s no telling what the Browns offense will be up to.

Jets by the numbers

The Jets are averaging 21.0 points per game, but their offense has been a little up and down.  The Jets are averaging 115.4 yards rushing per game and 3.6 yards per carry.  They have gotten much better running the ball after inserting rookie RB Leon Washington as the main ball carrier.  The Jets are averaging 192.4 net yards passing per game and they’re completing 65.4% of their passes.  Chad Pennington has played pretty well so far this season as his shoulder is still holding up.

The Jets defense hasn’t played too well.  The Jets allow 24.7 points per game so far this season, and that should be worse considering how many yards they allow.  The Jets allow opponents to rush for 142.4 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry.  The Jets are having a hard time adjusting to Coach Mangini’s new 3-4 defense.  The secondary gives up a ton of passing yards.  The Jets allow 229.9 yards passing per game and allow opponents to complete 56.9% of their passes.

The defense needs to improve for the Jets, or their luck will run out soon.

Jets win a thriller 31-24 over Lions

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 23 October 2006 at 11:57 pm

The Jets won this football game because of their running game, which is a huge surprise. Chad Pennington managed the game well, completing 16 of 22 passes for 189 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Rookie RB Leon Washington had a fantastic football game. Washington carried the ball 20 times for 129 yards (6.5 ypc) and 2 TDs. Kevan Barlow chipped in 12 carries for 49 yards (4.1 ypc) and a TD. Jerricho Cotchery caught 7 passes for 79 yards. WR Justin McCareins got out of the doghouse long enough to catch one pass…..a 44-yard TD!

SS Erik Coleman (11 tackles) and LB Jonathan Vilma (11 tackles, 1 pass defensed and an interception) led the Jets defense. The Jets allowed the Lions to carry the football 22 times for 125 yards (5.7 ypc). The Lions also completed 22 of 36 passes for 261 net yards passing.

This was a good win for the Jets.

Jets vs. Lions

These two teams mirror each other, because they both have horrible defenses and offenses that throw much better than they run.  This should be a high scoring football game.

The Lions should try to run the ball with Kevin Jones (388 yards rushing) against a Jets run defense that allows 145.3 yards rushing per game and 4.4 yards per carry.  But this is a Mike Martz offense, so you know the Lions will be throwing much more than they will be running.  The offensive line needs to give Jon Kitna time to throw the ball, as he has been sacked 22 times already this year.  Lucky for him, the Jets only have 9 sacks this season and are led by one of their safeties (3 sacks).  The Jets allow 224.7 yards passing per game, and the Lions average 245.2 yards passing per game so the Lions look like they will have success moving the football.  WR Roy Williams is playing at a Pro Bowl level this season as he leads the Lions with 36 receptions for 552 yards.  Williams will be a huge problem for the Lions secondary, as they will probably have to double-cover him all game.  Mike Furrey (28 rec, 322 yards) and Az-Zahir Hakim should get plenty of single coverage and plenty of opportunities to exploit it.

The Jets actually run the football more than they throw it.  That should change this week.  Even though the Lions will be without their best defensive lineman (DT Shaun Rogers-failed drug test), they still will be tough against the run.  The Lions only allow 94.3 yards rushing per game and 3.4 yards per carry.   The Lions have a pitiful pass defense and the Jets are sure to take advantage of it.  The Lions allow their opponents to complete 70.6% of their passes for 247.7 yards passing per game, and a QB rating of 110.3!  Chad Pennington is going to have a huge game against this secondary.  WR Laveranues Coles will abuse whichever Lions CB tries to cover him.  Coles already has 38 receptions for 537 yards this season.  Look for Jerricho Cotchery to join in on the fun as he has 23 catches for 339 yards this season.

This game should be one of the highest scoring games of the football season, as neither team has the defense to stop anyone!  If I had to make a bet on this game…..I would take the over!  I think the Jets will win a very, very close game.

Jets free-safety looking good

The Jets defense as a whole has not played well, but Kerry Rhodes must be accounted for by the other teams offense at all times.  The Jets move him around all over the place on the defense, and let him blitz once in a while. Rhodes has 42 tackles, 3 sacks and an interception.  The second-year player is a building block for the defense to build around.

Jets win tight game 20-17

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 15 October 2006 at 9:33 pm

The Jets beat the Dolphins on Sunday even though the Dolphins had alot more yards than the Jets.  Chad Pennington was efficient, completing 17 of 29 passes for 175 yards and 2 TDs.  Rookie RB Leon Washington carried the ball 11 times for 58 yards (5.3 ypc).  Kevan Barlow carried the ball 13 times for 45 yards (3.5 ypc).  Laveranues Coles caught 5 passes for 106 yards and 2 TDs.  TE Chris Baker chipped in 4 catches for 39 yards.

The Jets defense somehow held the Jets to 17 points even though the Dolphins racked up 395 total yards.  The Jets allowed the Dolphins to run the ball 29 times for 129 yards (4.4 ypc).  The Dolphins completed 27 of 43 passes for 266 net yards passing.  DE Bryan Thomas had 11 tackles.  FS Kerry Rhodes had 9 tackles and defensed a pass.

This was a big win for the Jets, who somehow are 3-3 all of a sudden.

Jet’s flying high

I just want to say that I have been very impressed these last two seasons with my Jets. I have been a jet fan for 25 years now and it has been very heartbreaking up until 2004.Chad I have a lot of faith in your abilities, if you stay where you are (as a Jet-I), I see a very bright and promising career for both you and our beloved team. Once you slow down your game a bit more and find more confidence in your abilities I see you headed for the hall of fame at the end of your career.Keep up the march young Jet-I For I am always rooting (and praying) for you and our team.

Jets vs. Dolphins

The Dolphins are wasting great defensive play (263.6 yards per game) because of their pathetic offensive play (284.2 yards per game) so far this season.  The Dolphins must win this game, because if they fall to 1-5 they might as well play young players and get ready for next year.  The Jets on the other hand are on the fast track in their rebuilding effort.  The Jets are 2-3, but they’ve been in every game except the last one (41-0 loss to Jacksonville).

If the Dolphins don’t have a good game on offense this week….they might never have one.  The Dolphins should come out running Ronnie Brown (278 yards rushing) against the porous Jets run defense.  Teams are averaging 148.6 yards rushing and 4.4 yards per carry against the Jets defense.  As soon as the run is established, Joey Harrington should go to the air.  The Jets are allowing 216.4 yards passing per game this season, but they do have 5 interceptions this year, so Harrington will have to be careful.  Chris Chambers (21 rec, 210 yards) needs to get going this season and this is the perfect team to get it started against.  Wes Welker (27 rec, 299 yards) and TE Randy McMichael (16 rec, 197 yards) should be able to get open against the Jets too.

The Jets will try out their newest weapon on the Dolphins defense.  Rookie RB Leon Washington might be small, but he’s fast.  Washington has 159 yards rushing this season and he’s a good receiver out of the backfield and will challenge the Dolphins OLBs.  If the Jets protect Chad Pennington well, he will have a good day throwing against the Dolphins.  The Dolphins haven’t given up alot of yards passing (172.2 per game), but opposing QBs have been very efficient (93.2 QB rating) against their defense.  WRs Laveranues Coles (33 rec, 431 yards) and Jerricho Cotchery (22 rec, 333 yards) could have field days against the Dolphins secondary.  Watch TE Chris Baker if he draws Zach Thomas to cover him, because Baker will have a tremendous speed advantage in that case.

The Dolphins have the more talented team on paper, but games aren’t played on paper.  I’m going with the Jets until the Dolphins do something this season.
